Brecht Evens

Beautiful Illustration by illustrator Brech Evens. I don't know what it is about...the only info I can find is 'DE ORIGINELE TEKEKING VOOR DE ANTWERPSE STRIPMUUR) which I don't know what it means. Visit Brecht's blog here.

Learning about storyboards

So the first week of the Animation course at the RCA is over and I finally had some time over the weekend to realise what happened. Apart from inductions and welcome talks we had to work on a rather fast paced project which involved drawing storyboards and characters in twenty seconds or a minute(if we were lucky). I found it particularly challenging since I spend quite a long time on my illustrations and have no knowledge of camera angles, pacing etc. This is a scan of 'The Storyboard Design course', an incredibly useful book by Giuseppe Cristiano which is my first introduction to film language.

So I learned a lot and switched from drawing faded pencilpen lines to attacking the paper with a 4B pencil. I suddenly became aware of the fact that I haven't done any observational drawing in a very long time. So I got a sketchbook just for observational drawing and will do as much drawing as possible. Needless to say I am definitely not proud of most of the drawings I have done so far in my sketchbook haha.

Stanley Coll

I discovered Stanley Coll's paintings on facebook today and they immediately drew my attention. I love their colors, atmosphere and naive perspective. Unfortunately I did not manage to find much information about him online apart from the fact that he was born somewhere in the 1950s. You can see more of his work here.

Tom Edwards

Check out Tom Edwards' work on It's Nice That here. Tom and I were in the same class at Brighton Uni and we both share a love for medieval art and Pieter Bruegel! If you are in London don't hesitate to go and see the real pieces at Beach Gallery. You can see more of Tom's work here.

I just finished a commission today which proved out to be a bit tricky. Sometimes in spite of the fact that people state clearly what they want it is easy to get carried away and just do your own thing, what you are used to. That is why it is nice to work for other people and learn from them! Will post the illustration as soon as it is published!

Dadu Shin

I really admire the illustrations of Dadu Shin and really enjoyed reading this interview where he talks about the process of making his work. I enjoy looking at artists' work in process. Things are still unrefined and the emphasis is just on putting down an idea.

Looking at Dadu Shin's sketchbook pages made me realise that I haven't used a proper sketchbook for a very long time. I find them quite intimidating since often I feel like I am ruining nicely bound sketchbooks. Usually I prefer working on cheap A4 printer paper. Working this way has it's advantages since I can then spread out all the sheets of paper which I find particularly useful when I'm working on ideas but often I end up loosing them. I also miss working on bigger surfaces (not massive, maybe A3) and also doing observational drawing. Something tells me that I will soon be making a visit to the Seawhite of Brighton and buy some cheap (definitely less intimidating than Moleskines) sketchbooks.

Aaron Leighton

Aaron Leighton gave a really interesting talk about his work at Pictoplasma in Berlin and I was lucky enough to meet him. These photographs/illustrations are part of his Spirit City Toronto project (which also got published in a book) and you can see more of his work here. Aaron enjoys discovering and documenting creatures in boring urban landscapes. If you look hard enough next time you go for a walk maybe you can see them too!

Lovely 3D animated type

There is something really nice about 3d animated type. The first and last screen grab is from 2veinte's showreel (a Buenos Aires motion graphics studio) and you can watch it here. The middle one is from Glitch's trailer and you can watch it here. I'm inspired!

Hello(work in progress)

Just finished animating this illustration. It is now in the process of becoming interactive and I can't wait to interact with it when it is done!
I wanted to make something colorful and happy with animated letters so it is quite different than my usual work.

Boonchu Tanti's Ashtanga Illustrations

I recently started doing Ashtanga yoga again and I really enjoy it. I love the fact that it is very challenging and the movement is flowing so it feels a bit like a dance.
My friend Elena showed me these illustrations of Boonchu Tanti. What I like is that some of them are based on real people and events. The first one was inspired by this video with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and the second one features Tim Feldmann (Kino MacGregor's husband) in Durvasana thinking about Kino adjusting him into the pose:)

New Illustration!

Really happy to get back to drawing again! Just finished this piece called Exposed. It is about making things happen and the death of Patrick Musimu who was the first man to dive in 200m on a single breath.

I have also updated my website. Check it out here. Enjoy!
